Joyciline Jepkosgei upset Kenyan compatriot and world record holder Brigid Kosgei to claim her first London Marathon title with a bold run.

The 27-year-old, who won the 2019 New York Marathon, made the decisive move around 22 miles.

Kosgei rallied briefly but could not reel in the break as Jepkosgei won in two hours 17 minutes and 42 seconds.

Charlotte Purdue, who controversially missed out on Tokyo 2020 selection, was the first Briton home.

Purdue finished 10th in a personal best 2:23.26, just short of second-placed Mara Yamauchi on the British all-time list but well inside the qualifying standard for next year's World Championships in Oregon.

Kosgei, competing just 57 days after claiming Olympic silver in Tokyo, faded to fourth.
